A DAY centre which serves the Okehampton and Hatherleigh area received what they hope will be the first of many boosts to their fund raising activities following the recent £500 donation from Plymouth and South West Co-operative?s Funeral Division.

The Okehampton/Hatherleigh day centre, which meets at Okehampton Rugby Club, offers an important social opportunity for old age pensioners and is dependent upon donations for its future.

Rose Davis, co-ordinator for the day centre, said: ?Our ladies and gents really look forward to their days out here. They have a good old catch up and enjoy a hot meal ? it?s very important for them to have this chance to socialise.

?We are dependent upon donations and we cannot thank the Co-op enough ? this money will make all the difference to us.?

Terry Hoar, funeral director with Okehampton Co-operative ? formerly Maddaford Funeral Service ? said: ?It is with great pleasure that we are able to help this group. As a Co-operative we are a very community focussed organisation and whenever possible we like to be able to support and help the people in our area.

?This group is a vital part of the community and we hope that this donation will not only raise the group?s profile but also encourage other companies and organisation in the area to come forward with further donations.?
