THE?Co-operative in Tavistock's Brook Street has apologised for the fact that the lifts to the car park above its store have been out of order for some time.

The announcement follows complaints by shoppers. One elderly couple said they were unable to use the lift to get their shopping to their vehicle in the car park and had to struggle to climb the several flights of stairs up to the multi-storey.

A spokesperson for the Co-operative store said: 'We regret that both the lifts at our store on Brook Street are currently out of order, but we would like to reassure customers that we are working closely with contractors to rectify the issue.

'In the meantime, staff at the store are providing extra support to customers who may need help to the car park and will either carry their bags for them, or wait with their bags while they bring their car down to the main entrance.

'We would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused to customers and we hope to reinstate lifts as soon as possible.'
