A WEST Devon social club for adults with learning disabilities is appealing for volunteers to help it expand and offer additional activities.
The Welcome Club of Tavistock – formerly the Welcome Centre and Gateway Club run by Mencap — was taken over by Robert Owen Communities last month, and now wants to give members a greater choice of activities including skittles, coach trips and themed disco nights.
The club's longer term aim is to become more community based and embedded in Tavistock social networks.
The club – which meets on a Thursday and Friday morning at the Alexander Centre and a Thursday evening at the Red and Black Football Club — is keen to encourage new members to join.
Team leader Jane Anning said: 'We have up to 40 members in the mornings, many of whom are lifelong friends, and have been asking them what they would like.
'We're fundraising to purchase up to date equipment and other resources and also want to expand the service enabling users to do more in their community.
'My background is teaching adults with learning difficulties and some members are keen for more educational input but we do also want to ensure all members are happy with the changes.
'We're keen to facilitate members in choosing activities they would like to do.
'We'd also like to encourage more people of any disability, including some younger blood.'
The club is currently organising a series of fundraising activities including participation in the annual Goose Fair in October to help support its activities and is also keen to find additional volunteers, especially for the morning get together sessions.
Roles will include helping people to take part in craft activities and socialising with them. Committee members are also keen to find suitable office space in Tavistock to assist in the smooth running of the clubs.
The club would like to thank Ann McDonald of Mencap, The Wharf which has been hosting the Welcome Club on a temporary basis, the Alexander Centre and the Red and Black Football Club for their support.
