THE front page story (January 20) and the article (January 27) concerning sports facilities in the Tavistock area, raises more questions than answers.

The Crowndale Recreation Association proposal to provide soccer-only facilities would appear to be pre-empting the development of a strategy for the provision of sports facilities in the Crowndale valley, as recommended by Sports England.

The Tavistock Athletic Club have consistently campaigned for a co-ordinated approach to the development of sports facilities in the Tavistock area with all the relevant bodies working together to provide compatible facilities.

Ideally, the facilities would meet the needs of both Tavistock College and the community as a whole.

This is surely the only way to ensure best utilisation of the limited land available and ensure the provision of multi-sports facilities as originally intended. Establishing a strategy for the development of sports facilities in the Crowndale valley will hopefully address these issues.

It should also be recognised that Sports England are the advisory body for the major funding parties and to ignore its recommendation would severely jeopardise the opportunity for attracting maximum funding for any proposed scheme in the area.
