TAVISTOCK fought Bristol North all the way for second place at the Friendly Gala, hosted by Paignton Swimming Club on Saturday. Paignton, who led from the start were the clear winners but Tavistock, in third place after 16 events, put in a tremendous team effort and gradually closed the gap with Bristol North to finish in second place. It was an excellent opportunity for many of the younger, inexperienced swimmers to compete alongside the older, experienced squad members. The younger swimmers also had to cope with the unusual distance of Torbay?s 33 1/3m pool, which they did admirably well. Sam Campbell gave Tavistock their first win with a brilliant swim in the 10/under 1L Freestyle event. Sam went on take another first in the 1L Butterfly with an equally convincing win. Rebecca Windemer, swimming in the 12/under 1L Butterfly, got her first win for Tavistock under her belt and was also awarded Swimmer of the Gala by the Coach on poolside, Wendy Stephens. The 12/under Relay Team of Tom Crocker, Sam Harmsworth, Josh Stephens and Joshua Thackham were unbeatable in both the Freestyle and Medley Relays. Kameron Brimble and Leonie Isaacs, representing Tavistock for the first time got off to an excellent start with Leonie finishing in second place in the 12/under 1L Backstroke and was in the 12/under Team who finished second in the Freestyle Relay. Kameron swam in the 10/under Relay Team who came second place in both the Freestyle and the Medley events.
