A DAMP start to the day did not mar the Devon County Bowling Championships at Tavistock Sir Francis Drake Bowling club on Saturday and Sunday.

The deputy mayor Cllr Marjorie Corner, opened the proceeding and handed the responsibility of the green over to the county president Roger Bawden.

The vice-president of the club Tom Sharp then welcomed the county officials and competitors to Tavistock.

The deputy mayor watched the early-semi finals of the 'over 60s' and 'two wood' competitions.

Saturday afternoon saw the finals of the two wood, the over 60s, the county pairs and the county singles competitions. The foremost prize, the county singles, was won by the England international star Danny Dennison of Torquay Belgrave Bowling Club, Neil Hamlyn of Plymouth North Down taking the runner-up prize.

The two wood was won by Devon Middleton cup skip, James Webber of Bitton Park (Teignmouth).

The over 60s winner was Maurice Martin (Bradworthy) and the pairs competition was won by Lee Haywood and Neil Pook (Shaldon), both members of Devon's record winning Middleton cup team.

Sunday was a different proposition — a Tavistock summer day of sunshine and heavy showers and conditions for bowling were difficult.

The morning saw the semi-finals of the secretary/treasurers competition and the under 40s singles, the finals of those two competitions, held in the afternoon, being won by Kevin Phillips (City of Exeter) and Paul Bailey (Mount Gould) respectively.

A team from Plymouth North Down won the triples final. The coveted county fours trophy was won by Eddie Correy, Mike Wills, Derek Gilmartin and England international David Cutler, of Plymouth Sir Francis Drake.
