LEWDOWN Cricket Club will be playing the match of a lifetime at Lord?s Cricket Ground in September. The Lewdown club has been holding a number of events to celebrate its centenary this year, including a recent sportsman?s evening at Jethro?s Nightclub. Club secretary Jack Skuse said they had heard of the possibility for clubs celebrating their centenary to play at the prestigious ground, long seen as the ?home of cricket? and the game?s spiritual headquarters. ?We made some enquiries and they said yes,? he said, the agreed date being Friday, September 22. Jack said he thought they would be playing against MCC ground staff, probably on the nursery ground. The visit will also include a tour of Lord?s. Jack said everyone in the club was ?really excited?. ?It?s been quite a good season and this will bring it to a great end. Lord?s is the home of cricket and playing there isn?t something you do every day!? The team will be travelling up to London a day or two before the event, with a coachload of supporters travelling up on the morning. Three team members have chosen a more difficult way to get there, however. They will walk the 240 miles from Lewdown to Lord?s in aid of charity, hoping to arrive the day before the match at the end of the ten-day walk, to give them time to recover. Jack, who is one of the walkers, said he, David Ball and Kyle Abbott were in training for the walk, which will be in aid of Cancer Research UK and the Second Home Foundation. He said he had spent time travelling in South East Asia last year and had come across the Second Home Foundation, which was set up by a monk to provide education for disadvantaged children in Northern Thailand. Anyone wishing to sponsor the walkers, go on the supporters? coach or wishing to know more should contact Jack Skuse on 01566 783412. The club?s presentations and luncheon will take place at Eagle House, Launceston on Sunday, October 1.
