Devon & Exeter Senior 1 LeagueWestern Rovers 1 Okehampton 1st 3 A MUCH improved performance saw Argyle move a step nearer to winning the Devon & Exeter senior one league title and premier league football next season. Once again Argyle were missing several regular first team players and had to rely on four reserve team players who all had outstanding games. Argyle opened the scoring on eight minutes when Steve Williams was quick to react to a mix up in the Rovers? defence and drive the ball home. Rovers levelled the scores when the referee awarded a penalty. Argyle keeper Daniel Malcolm did well to block the spot kick, but the taker reacted quickest to convert the rebound. Argyle?s Elliot Collins was sent off just ten minutes into the second half for a second yellow card, followed by a similar decision for the Rovers no 7, evening things up. This seemed to spur Argyle on and Mark Hampson played a superb ball down the left flank for Robert Sandercock to pick out Paul Yip, who calmly placed the ball wide of the Rover?s keeper. Okehampton?s third came from a powerful challenge by Ed Squire in midfield. With a superb lay off Ed found Steve Williams in space to fire the ball in the top right corner. With four games remaining, all at home, and a re-arranged Okehampton Cup semi final on May 7 Argyle could still complete the double and finish a great season. Devon & Exeter Senior 1 League Okehampton 1st 2 Halwill 1 OKEHAMPTON went into this game needing at least a point to be sure of winning the Devon & Exeter Senior One title and win promotion back to the Premier league next season. Argyle dominated for large periods of the first half but failed to take their chances. Sandercock and Yip used the wings well for Okehampton getting in behind the Halwill defence, but Argyle lacked composure in front of goal and squandered several early chances. Argyle?s first goal came from a powerful run through the Halwill midfield by young Ed Squire. Showing a good turn of pace and close control, Ed found Adam Mortimore who finished well when being closed down by the Halwill defence. Argyle missed a handful of chances before half-time and desperately needed that second goal. Halwill started brightly with Wonnacott and Windsor causing most of the problems for Argyle?s defence, but Soby, Williams, Wills and Agnew stood firm and Argyle did get that second goal on 65 minutes when Steve Williams robbed the Halwill defender and hammered home. Halwill enjoyed their best period of play and from a corner pulled a goal back when their defender headed in at the far post. Argyle dug deep and just about deserved to hang on and take the points. Next game Saturday April 29 home to Newtown, 3pm kick-off. On Sunday Halwill play Chagford in Okehampton Cup semi final, kick-off 3pm at Simmons Park. The final is on May 14.
