Western Counties West
Okehampton 13
Wellington 12
THE outcome of the match was not as close as the scoreline shows. Hopefully in the near future Okehampton are going to take their chances and post a score actually to reflect their performance.
Pressure was on both sides, Okes wanting to create a five-point gap over Wellington and the visitors desperate to close their current position on the rest of the league.
The foundation for the win was built on a fine individual performance from the improving Griffiths, the competitive Searle and the ever reliable Curtis.
Forwards presented good ball for the flu-struck Vick to orchestrate moves, the pack relished the challenge against an older, bigger pack. After a flowing movement Searle set Mason up for a try, Searle's final tally was a conversion, penalty and a long range drop goal.
Wellington's first half score was a try following Okes losing concentration at a lineout.
The second period saw Okes retreat into their shell and just absorb the pressure. It was only following Wellington's late converted try that Okes upped the pace and should have extended their lead.
This Sunday sees the visit of Torquay in the Devon Senior Cup. They are two divisions above Okes, and playing well at after an injection of players and money. The players will need to be at their best to offer a true Okehampton welcome.
