Okehampton Columbines firsts 2
Mannamead firsts 3
OKEHAMPTON, playing away with one of their best squads, still knew that Mannamead first would be challenging.
Okehampton's defence worked hard in the first 20 minutes but seemed reasonably in control. The emphasis on defence meant some long passes out of the main play were too far and too fast for the Okehampton attack and several went off the Mannamead back line.
Mannamead did not let up and a rising ball struck defender Sandy Douglas in the thigh while she covered the goal-line but the resulting penalty flick was saved by goalie Sophie Whiteley. This was one of several saves by Sophie who increases in presence and versatility with every game.
Mannamead demonstrated great skill at interception which often prevented Okehampton breaking through. They also had some good tactical moves which, combined with their speed, led to dangerous attacking formations. Several were frustrated by the swift and determined work of Louise Weller at left half who startled Mannamead more than once with her quickness. This was matched by left wing and captain Alex Collins who often entered the melee and emerged victoriously with the ball to lead another attack for Okehampton.
But an attack on Mannamead's right wing paid off and, despite a last desperate flurry by Okehampton, Mannamead went one up.
Jo Moppett seemed buried in defenders at several points which gave others space but no-one could quite take advantage. In the dying seconds of the first half Jo took a free hit on the edge of the circle, took it in herself as the new rules allow and with a back strike passed the goalie to give an even score.
Both sides continued to make chances and both had both good and bad luck. It was a well fought game with every part of the pitch in action. Okehampton therefore had a sense of disbelief when a weak strike from a short corner skimmed through the defence to put Mannamead 2-1 up.
A third goal for Mannamead came from a long cross which just skimmed along the goal line at an acute angle. Kim Davey at left wing used her speed to take the ball down and few could keep up. Okehampton never let up and Kim struck an excellent shot which went under the goalie and was tapped over the line by Jo Moppet.
The final whistle went with a Mannamead win but Okehampton will look forward to playing this young and fast team again in the new year.
• This week Okehampton are at home to Kingsbridge and Salcombe with the game starting at 2.30pm.
