AT the top of division one of the Okehampton and district Table Tennis League, Tavistock A moved three points clear following their 10-0 win over bottom side Anchorage B.
Tavistock A scores were Fred Phillips (3), Roger Bowkett (3), Peter Hicks (3). Anchorage B scores were Roger Gilbert (0), Colin Jones (0), Jenny Gilbert (0). Tavistock A also won the doubles and secured a bonus point.
The Young Ones slipped into second place although they managed a 3-7 win away at Anchorage A. In the final singles with Anchorage 1-7 down, Martin Fowler faced Edward Haskell in a hard fought five set match. Martin finally won through 15-13, 8-11, 6-11, 11-9, 11-9. The doubles was just as close as Martin teamed up with Colin Brooker against George Haskell and Andy Moppett. After going two sets behind, the Anchorage team fought back to take the game in five sets. Anchorage A scores were Martin Fowler (2), Colin Brooker (0), Robert Vella (0). The Young Ones scores were George Haskell (3), Edward Haskell (2), Andy Moppett (2).
Bridestowe were missing their top player Mark Tancock as they entertained Okehampton A. Mark Fogerty secured a fine individual maximum for Bridestowe although Barry Vaughan pushed him all the way just losing in the fifth set. A doubles win for Barry Vaughan and Barry Denner over Mark Fogerty and Francis Griffiths in five sets gave Okehampton a 3-7 win on the night. Bridestowe scores were Francis Griffiths (0), Phil Down (0), Mark Fogerty (3). Okehampton A scores were Barry Denner (2), Barry Vaughan (2), Tony Howick (2).
In a close match, The J Team beat Academy A 6-4. Naomi Jackson secured another fine maximum for The J Team while Academy A players Tom Pengelly and Tom Pearce both beat Sarah Jackson and Frank Cockburn in close games. At 5-4 down, Academy A players Tom Pearce and Ben Hill took on Naomi and Frank as they fought for a draw. However, Frank and Naomi proved too strong winning in four sets. The J Team scores were Naomi Jackson (3), Sarah Jackson (1), Frank Cockburn (1). Academy A scores were Tom Pengelly (2), Tom Pearce (2), Ben Hill (0).
In division two, leaders North Wyke were away to Okehampton B. Oke B player Janice Seabrook maintained her 100% record for the season with another fine maximum and Dick Randell did well to beat Jill Dilley in four sets. Steve Granger and Paulo Dumont won the doubles against Dick and June Randell in four sets to give North Wyke a 4-6 win which keeps them in a strong position for the division two title although Milton Abbot do have two games in hand and may yet pose a threat.
