CLIMBING the height of Everest is the challenge for the youngsters of the 1st Okehampton Scout Group. As their contribution to this year?s Gimme 5 Challenge, the beavers, cubs, scouts and explorer scouts will be going up and down stairs until they have, between them, climbed the height of Everest. The sponsored Everest challenge is taking place at the group?s coffee morning in the Charter Hall, on Saturday, March 25. The money raised will be divided between the WWF?s (World Wildlife Fund) work in protecting endangered species and habitats around the world and the Needy Scouts Fund. The fund enables youngsters from around the globe to attend the Centenary World Scout Jamboree next year and the 1st Okehampton Scout Group itself. The idea of the Gimme 5 Challenge is to pledge to raise money through an activity based around one of five continents ? Africa, America, Asia, Australasia and Europe. The initiative is running for its second year following its great success last year and has attracted celebrity support from Top of the Pops Saturday host Fearne Cotton and writer and TV presenter Ben Fogle. All members who take part in the challenge will receive thank you certificates. If they raise £15 or more in sponsorship they will receive a special event badge and by raising £25 of more they gain a medal. If you would like to support the 1st Okehampton Scout Group with their challenge then you can pop along to their coffee morning or sponsor them at Chastey?s Shoes or Beanfeast.
