THE remaining one of four shelters in Tavistock's Meadows is to stay, despite a complaint about its condition at the recent annual town meeting.

Councillors at last week's meeting of the town's properties committee heard the other three shelters had been demolished over the years and the remaining one had been made as vandal-proof as possible.

Town mayor Cllr Norma Woodcock said: 'There's many a person who has done their courting there — I would be very reluctant to see it go. Also, people sit there to watch the bowling, as it is immediately opposite the green.'

Cllr Caroline Keane, chairman of the properties committee, said she too would like to see the shelter remain in situ.

The committee recommended the shelter should be retained and given regular maintenance to keep it in a clean and tidy condition.
