A TEENAGER from Bere Alston who is already a qualified RYA dinghy instructor at the age of 16 has been given an award by the outgoing Mayor of West Devon.

Jo Coomber is the winner of the 2013 Under 18s Mayoral Award.

She was nominated by Bere Ferrers Parish Council for her 'positive approach' and talent in sailing.

Jo was unable to attend the awards ceremony at West Devon Borough Council's Kilworthy Park offices last month, so the outgoing mayor Cllr Robin Musgrave, met up with her at Weir Quay to present her with a framed certificate.   

She said: 'I was surprised and delighted to receive this award. Weir Quay Sailing Club has given me so much over the last six years and it is fantastic to be able to give something back to the club and my community by helping other young people learn to sail and appreciate the river.'
