OKEHAMPTON will host the first of a series of Hospiscare Service of Light events across the Exeter, Mid and East Devon region.

In recent years, Hospiscare, which provides end-of-life care for patients and their families, has helped people honour the memories of departed friends and family with a series of uplifting services of remembrance which will include carols, readings and prayers.

The Okehampton event takes place at Fairplace Church on Friday, November 30 from 7pm.

Sarah Smith, Hospiscare's event fundraising manager, said: 'At this time of year, many people's thoughts will be turning towards the past, particularly to memories of lost loved ones. We appreciate that while this is a very happy time of year for many, there are those for whom Christmas can be very difficult, whether they are newly bereaved or lost someone a long time ago.'

One way to honour the memory of a lost loved one is by dedicating a light on the Tree of Light, which will be situated on Cathedral Green in Exeter and lit for the first time at a special Christmas service on Sunday December 9 at 5pm.

The names of all those for whom dedications are made can be seen in the Book of Memories, on display in each of the participating churches, while the light will appeal as a symbol of remembrance on the tree itself.

The tree will be lit every evening at dusk and both the book and the tree can be seen at the cathedral until January 6.

This year, Hospiscare have introduced an everlasting dedication, where people can make their donation by direct debit and their dedication will automatically appear in the Book of Memories every year. Dedications can be made on 01392 688020, by post to Hospiscare, Dryden Road, Exeter EX2 5JJ or online at http://www.hospiscare.co.uk">www.hospiscare.co.uk by November 19.
