MORE?than 20 adults from Tavistock and the surrounding area are preparing to take a step of faith this coming Sunday beside, or in, the River Tavy.
The new bishop of Crediton, the Rt Rev Nick McKinnel, who was previously vicar of St Andrew's, Plymouth, will baptise two adults in the river, and splash more than 20 others as a reminder of their baptism, as they confirm or affirm their faith.
The candidates range from young teenagers to a physiotherapist, a deputy principal, and a veterinary nurse.
Priest-in-charge of Tavistock, the Rev Michael Brierley said:?'It's been an immense privilege, with others, to prepare these people for their public declaration of faith, whatever stage of life they're at. I've seen at first hand how faith gives real meaning to their lives, and helps them make sense of it.
'They're a terrific group of people, and the discussions on Sunday evenings in the adult group have been so lively that when our meetings have finished, they've transferred to the Union Inn!'
If the weather is fine, the service will take place outside in the churchyard, moving to the river halfway through the service for the baptisms before returning to the churchyard.
If the weather is inclement, the service and baptisms will take place inside St Eustachius' Church.
'Baptisms in the river are incredibly moving,' added Mr Brierley. 'That's how baptisms were done in the first centuries, and it's a terrific spectacle.
'We only get the chance to do them in the River Tavy once a year, so I'm praying for fine weather — anyone and everyone is warmly invited to drop by and take a look.'
The service begins at 10am, and will be followed by refreshments, and all are welcome to attend.
