A DOUBLE helping of brass band entertainment is heading for Tavistock, as the United Reformed Church welcomes two bands in five days.
Saltash Town Band will get the musical double bill under way at 7.45pm on Friday, May 30, and the Plymouth Congress Hall Salvation Army Band will provide the second instalment on Tuesday, June 3, at 7.30pm.
The concerts will be held in the church on Russell Street. Tickets are available from BookStop.
The Rev Roger Cornish said: ?These two concerts herald a big change for the URC as major refurbishment of the church gets underway. I?m very sorry, but those of you who may have wanted to sit on our pews for the very last time will be disappointed unless you sit in the gallery, as the pews were shipped off to Guildford last week.?
He said it was a back-breaking job for the team of volunteers who loaded the lorry.
New chairs and carpet will arrive in September.
In the meantime, the interior of the church will be filled with scaffolding as a new ceiling is erected and the whole building is redecorated.
Mr Cornish said to finance this work the church will have to take out an interest free loan.
?Naturally we want to be able to clear this debt as soon as possible and numerous fund raising events have been organised,? he said.
?No longer restricted by pews, the church building will be much more attractive, comfortable and flexible, and we hope will better serve the community.
?One project we hope to be able to recommence, if there is the demand, is the Tavistock Toy Library,? he said.
