ST James' Chapel became a hub of activity last Saturday, as the churches of the town together celebrated some of the social action and social justice projects they have been involved in. A variety of events were held during the day to celebrate Christian Aid Week, including an hour-long skip-a-thon. A talented break dancing team, including students from Okehampton College, entertained a growing crowd of bystanders. They drew attention to the collection for Christian Aid that was also taking part in the town, and promoted the Connect youth work done within the college itself. At the entrance to St James' Chapel, a continuous loop of audio-visual material presented some of the work being done by Christian Aid in various parts of the world. And by the entrance, Palestinian foods were being sold, to support hard-pressed farmers in the occupied territories of Palestine. Information was available about some of the projects that local Christians in the Okehampton area have been involved in. The day was arranged on behalf of Christians Together Okehampton, by the group Just Living. The Rev David Muir, present leader of the group, said: 'It has been an excellent day, with a lot of really positive conversations with people who can see what God has inspired in various people. The invitation is always there for more people to get involved.' Mr Muir is about to retire, but others will keep the Just Living group alive and active. Anyone interested in getting involved can e-mail Mr Muir on [email protected]">[email protected] A total of £400.43 was collected during the day for Christian Aid.
