OKEHAMPTON Choral Society?s latest concert in Fairplace Church was a sell-out, raising £321 towards the church modernisation bill of £400,000.

The programme was a mix of choral themes, ballads and spirituals, featuring some solo performances from John Colpoys and Linda Bellairs.

Among the operatic evergreens was Verdi?s ever popular Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves from Nabucco and an excerpt from Trial by Jury with Brian Abell conjuring the slapstick hilarity from Sullivan?s sprightly score.

A choir of mixed voices sang Handel?s Hallelujah chorus and accompaniment was provided by Beryl Palmer and John Holland, the latter combining the duties of director, conductor, arranger and organist. Readings by Roger Partridge introduced a shift of variety.

The programme was repeated at the Hatherleigh Festival on Sunday.

Latest figures show that the debt has so far been reduced to a more comforting £20,000.
