A CHARITY appeal has been launched in West Devon to offer magical Christmas breaks for children that might otherwise be forgotten.

Children at the CHICKS Moorland Retreat in Brentor got into the Christmas spirit earlier this week as they donned Santa hats and officially launched the charity's Christmas Appeal.

The charity aims to provide children from across Devon and the rest of the country with a special Christmas break.

The children suffer from a range of issues such as poverty, neglect and caring responsibilities which means they will be unable to celebrate a traditional Christmas at home.

Head of fundraising and communications, Tim Bunting, said: 'Having two children of my own, I know how special Christmas can be. The thought of a child not enjoying a Christmas dinner, not having a present to open or not even having a loved one to spend time with is heart breaking.

'We want to give these children who might otherwise be forgotten the chance to enjoy all that Christmas has to offer but as a charity with limited funds, we need the support of generous individuals to make them a reality.'

During their week long break with CHICKS, the children will take part in a wide range of activities and festivities including a trip the pantomime, ice skating, a visit from Father Christmas and more.

The breaks will be held from December 23 to 27, which means the children will be able to enjoy the whole Christmas period in a fun, safe and supportive environment surrounded by CHICKS staff and volunteers who will be giving up Christmas with their own families to spend it with the children.

One of the children CHICKS helped last Christmas was eleven year old Ruby.

Ruby has been a victim of physical abuse, neglect and poverty and was consequently removed from the care of her parents.

With her foster carers unavailable, Ruby had nowhere to go at Christmas and faced the prospect of spending this special time alone.

Fortunately, Ruby was able to spend last Christmas at CHICKS and had a wonderful time surrounded by new friends.
