ENTRIES in the 19th Halwill Flower and Produce Show on September 3 were up on last year. Although 90 schedules were sold, only 39 entry forms were submitted. Each schedule and entry form carries a lucky number, so that those who participate in the show have a chance of winning £25. Mrs Lorna Hutchings opened the show and after the public had viewed the entries, trophies were present by Mrs Hutchings. The Garden News ?Top Tray 2005? sponsored by D T Brown was won by Michael Crocker, winning a £10 voucher and second was Mrs Jean Seal, winning a £5 voucher. Mrs Betty Darke won the £10 voucher in the Garden News ?Top Vase 2005? sponsored by Mr Fothergill?s with Mrs Valerie Balsdon second, winning a £5 voucher and third Mrs Doreen Bray, winning a £3 voucher. The Beechwood Cup for best vegetable exhibit was won by Michael Crocker with his magnificent onions. Mr Crocker also won the Thomson Cup for the vegetable classes. The Fruit Cup was won by Lawrence Johnson. Mrs Angela Bertram won the Noon Rosebowl for the flowers and potted plant classes and Mrs Betty Darke won the Wright Cup for flower arranging. The Margaret Darke Trophy for best pot plant was won by Mrs Betty Darke with her foliage plant. The Doreen Norris Memorial Challenge Cup for preserves was won jointly by Mrs Millicent Hill (lemon curd), Mrs Pat Trout (pickled onions), Mrs Lorraine Crocker (jar of jam) and Michael Crocker (jar of jelly). The Holway Cup for the cookery section was won by Mrs Millicent Hill. Mrs Pat Smallacombe won the Metherell Gard Cup for handicraft. The Dart cup for the children?s section was won by Rachel Ley who had 26 points, Matthew Isaac was second with 16 points and joint third were Hayley Northam and Emily Isaac both with 9 points. They also won prize money of £3 first, £2 second and £1 third. The Dennis Hunt Novice Shield is awarded to the novice with the overall highest number of points who has not won a cup before and this year it went to Mrs Myra du?Gay. The Parish Council Cup for the overall highest number of points was won by Mrs Jean Seal who had 45 points. Michael Crocker was a close second with 43 points and Mrs Millicent Hill was third with 34 points. It was encouraging to see so many children taking part this year ? the miniature gardens on a plate and vegetable monsters were marvellous. A total of 110 people came to view the show and there were good raffle prizes which raised £126 towards next year?s event.
