Tavistock Colts 27

Wiveliscombe Colts 0

TAVISTOCK enjoyed plenty of possession and spent long periods in their opponents' half, but a strong defence prevented a score until a lineout won by Sam Lawson on the 22-metre line enabled a drive to within a metre of the try-line.

Will Branfield was the first to react and protected it until support arrived. Scrum half Moy passed to the midfield to change the point of attack. The try was awarded, centre Dan Smith claiming it.

Early in the second half the Wiveliscombe No 8 left the field through injury and Tavistock ran in three good tries through Smith, stand-off Sam Smerdon and winger Simon Braithewaite. These three looked an effective unit with slick passing, direct approach and good support running. Braithewaite enjoyed his best game of the season with strong, fast runs and was denied a second try when the ball was kicked from his grasp as he dived over.

Smerdon ended the scoring with a late try and converted one of the five scored. The Tavistock back row of Boreham, Wheatley and Gorman dominated, with Gorman letting nothing through close to the set-pieces. Lawson caught well in the lineout and Hayward disrupted opposition throw-ins. Tim Child, asked to play loose head prop, found himself against the biggest forward but dominated in set scrums.

Doug Lloyd was solid in defence and Jed Bolt on the right wing gave his opposite winger no time to settle with powerful early tackles.
