I COULD hardly believe my eyes when I saw the article 'Moving to the heart of the town' (Times February 8) containing the suggestion that the Tavistock Subscription Library had outlived its usefulness.
Not long ago the Subscription Library was host to the Association of Independent Libraries for its Annual Day and members found a flourishing organisation maintaining itself where it has always been, in the historic heart of the town.
The town council has previously recognised the importance of supporting this historic link with the local culture of Tavistock.
It would be detrimental to this vision if the Library were to be wrenched from its present location.
The Tavistock Subscription Library has survived many vicissitudes: the Town Council will, I hope, seek to cherish this unique survival, not destroy it.
