FIRE fighters from Tavistock attended a fire in a house at Lewdown on Monday morning following an 11,000 volt power surge.

The surge was caused by prolonged dry weather being followed by a burst of rain which made the isolator crack.

Sub officer Tim Smith said: ?No one was hurt as it was a small fire. But I would like to remind people to check the batteries in their smoke alarms.

?The alarm at this house had a dead battery so would have been useless.

?The number of deaths has been reduced thanks to smoke alarms, but they are no good if the battery is dead.?
