A TEAM from Kelly College in Tavistock have pledged to take part in an incredible long distance swim for charity this Monday ? which could even be entered into the record books. Led by director of swimming and former GB Olympic swim team captain Robin Brew, the team has undertaken to complete one million metres in a 24 hour continuous swim. The effort is part of a global fundraising effort called Swim Malaria. Every day, seven jumbo jets full of children die from Malaria ? the prevention is easy, a long lasting mosquito bed net costing $5 is all it takes. Kelly College has pledged to swim the furthest distance of any group taking part in an effort to raise these funds. In doing so this swim could be a world record. As part of this, a team of young swimmers have signed up to swim 100,000 metres in the 24 hour period by themselves. The swim starts at midnight on Sunday December 4 and continues till midnight on Monday Decembe 5. Carolyn Stacey of Kelly College said: ?Whilst most of the swimmers will be a member of the swim squad, the remaining swimmers taking part are school members who are only able to swim a few metres but have joined in to make this a success and achieve the goal of one million metres and the target of £10,000 in fund raising. ?Swimmers include swim squad members, coaches, teachers, pupils, parents, the youngest being only four years of age!?
