RESEARCH published this week by environmental charity Westden has revealed many young people in West Devon are being seriously disadvantaged by rural isolation. For more than half the young people in this area, lack of transport has a serious impact on their work and social lives ? some have even had to turn down interviews or job offers because they couldn't reach the workplace. Report author Anne-Marie Hill said the income of young people in the borough is far lower than average. ?The lower minimum wages for under 21s makes the problem worse and with poor public transport, many young people are stuck.? Westden is seeking funding for its Getting There transport project which offers subsidised driving lessons for young people facing transport difficulties. A sponsored 26-mile sailing race is taking place between Plymouth and the Eddystone this weekend. Anyone who would like to sponsor Westden can call 0845 345 5077.
