HEADWAY Devon, the charity for children and adults with acquired brain injury, has received £44,000 from Children in Need but says it needs a further £200,000. The charity, which has a centre in West Devon at Halwill Junction, said the grant would help pay for the support centre for children at Exeter, which opened a year ago and is open every Saturday. The centre also has families travelling to it from West Devon. Headway Devon fundraiser Nick Hall said the service was ?desperately needed? by Devon families and children, which was why they were fundraising to open more Saturday centres. Mr Hall said: ?£44,000 from Children in Need is an excellent start, but we have a long way to go to meet our target of raising a further £200,000 to provide support for children with acquired brain injuries across Devon.? Earlier in the year research undertaken by psychologists based at Exeter University revealed that the number of Devon children under the age of five with acquired brain injuries was much higher than was previously thought. However, the people most at risk are 15-29 year-olds and the over-65s, the most common cause being road traffic accidents, falls and accidents at home or at work. Headway Devon has six rehabilitative support centres for adults and one for children. Approximately 90 adults and children attend the centres each week and additionally, 50 outreach workers visit clients in their own homes. Headway Devon would like to hear from any local organisations or businesses who would be interested in sponsoring the children?s centre . The contact number is 01392 224437.
