A MILESTONE award was presented to the Tavistock branch of a cancer charity at the organisation's annual meeting in Tavistock recently.

The award recognises the magnificent fundraising achievement of £137,439 by the Tavistock Cancer Research Campaign branch over the years.

Tavistock CRC is now known as Tavistock Cancer Research UK, following the amalgamation of the national charities Imperial Cancer Research Fund and the Cancer Research Campaign.

The milestone certificate was presented to chairman Dr Peter Rodgers, Jean Thompson, secretary and the rest of the committee by Kay Taplin, community fundraiser for Devon.

She explained the make-up of the new, amalgamated charity, its aims and said clinical cancer trials in all Devon's major hospitals are now funded entirely by Cancer Research UK.

The meeting, which was held at Abbey Surgery, also heard from Tavistock student teacher John Dwyer, who reported on his plans to run in this year's London Marathon with the Cancer Research UK team.

The evening ended with an entertaining slide show entitled 'A trip to St Michael's Mount' which was provided by Brian Chillery.
