A CHARITY which has helped hundreds of young homeless people in West Devon find accommodation has been wound up.
Housing Aid West Devon, formerly Tavistock Accommodation Bureau, was set up in the mid 1990s and was funded by grants from West Devon Borough Council. The charity was run from an office in Kingdon House and employed a part-time worker who gave young people advice and sought suitable affordable accommodation.
But with the withdrawal of grant funding, steep rises in rents and low levels of housing benefit for young people, the charity has finally agreed it can no longer carry on the work.
Gill Lane, company secretary, said the decision was not taken without much heart-searching. 'Sadly, it was an idea that just wasn't actually viable — it's a shame.'
The charity's remaining assets have been divided between Tavistock and Okehampton Citizens Advice Bureaux and the Devon Youth Association.
