OXFAM has launched a new emergency appeal to help address the growing crisis in South Sudan and the sale of a new book at Tavistock's Oxfam bookshop is hoping to help. More than a million people have been forced from their homes by fighting and desperately need water, food and protection from the violence. Oxfam teams have helped more than 150,000 so far, but funds are urgently needed to help the charity carry out its vital work. New Oxfam book Oxcrimes, a book of short stories written by a cast of renowned crime writers, is on sale at the bookshop in Market Street for £8.99 and hopes to raise funds towards the Sudan crisis appeal. Tavistock's Oxfam bookshop manager Val Sharpe said: 'Only three years ago, there was hope and jubilation in South Sudan as it became the world's youngest nation. It was born after decades of fighting, despair and loss. 'The road to prosperity changed dramatically, however, in December 2013, when fighting broke out in Juba and quickly spread to many parts of South Sudan. Now more than a million people have fled their homes, some to within South Sudan and others to neighbouring countries such as Sudan, Uganda, Ethiopia and Kenya. 'The sale of the Oxcrimes books is a real example of the diverse ways in which Oxfam raises funds. It previously published a book, OxTravels, which was really successful. The Oxfam shops across the country raise about 25-million pounds for Oxfam each year, but the scale of need seems to simply increase all the time.' If people want to give specifically to help the situation in South Sudan, then both Oxfam shops in the town are taking donations or people can give via the website.
