PEOPLE are being invited to take a sneak preview of the long-awaited Tavistock Youth Café this Saturday before it officially opens in August. To coincide with Tavistock Carnival Day, Tavistock and District Youth Council will be throwing open the doors to the new café for anyone who would like to take a look. Visiting times for the venue on the day are from 10am to noon, 1.30pm to 3.30pm and 8pm to 9pm. The café, costing more than £100,000, is housed in a double-sized purpose-built portable cabin at Pixon Lane and is currently being kitted out with a range of equipment, including a coffee bar, computers with internet access and a pool table. It has been two years since a team of young people from the youth council first identified the need for youngsters to have such a venue. In that time, the young people ? aged from 15 to 20 ? have worked tirelessly to realise their dream. Starting from scratch, they have worked alongside a range of organisations including the police, fire service, churches and councils and have managed to secure funding from many different trusts and charities. In the next month, a café manager will be appointed for the venue, which will be a safe, fun, friendly and non-discriminatory place where young people will want to visit on a regular basis. The café group is now seeking volunteers to help man the café when it is open.
