WORLD champion swimmer Liam Tancock has this week shown his support for a charity swimming event taking place in West Devon next month.

Almost 200 swimmers have already signed up for the one mile open-water swim for Hospiscare taking place at Roadford Lake on Saturday September 24.

The event is now in its third year, and is continuing to gather support. This year's event has been supported by Exeter swimmer Liam, who last month successfully defended his world title in the 50m backstroke.

Liam sent participants his best wishes: 'It's great to see so many people preparing for a charity event like this. I wish everyone good luck.'

Last year's event saw 400 swimmers take part, and raised £40,000 for the charity, which provides free specialist nurse care and practical support to people in their home.

Compere for this year's swim is Matt Young, of Exeter FM, and the event is being supported by a range of businesses from the area, including Mole Valley Farmers, Exeter Family Friendly, Thrifty Car and Van Rental, Bishop Fleming and Dorset Cereals, who are providing energy bars for all participants.

The swim is open to anyone aged 18 or over and no open-water swimming experience is necessary. Full details on how to sign up with tips on training are available on http://www.onemileswim.co.uk">www.onemileswim.co.uk
