FOUR-time British number one and European Champion table tennis player Matthew Syed visited the Riverside Club in Okehampton recently, to coach aspiring players.
Matthew, accompanied by his brother Andrew, who is also a top class player, took part in exhibition matches and provided coaching for budding youngsters. Both brothers are first class coaches and provided lots ot tips on playing the game.
Club chairman Fred Phillips said the day had been a great success.
'It was an excellent day,' he said. Mr Phillips said around 70 people had turned up to see the brothers play, travelling from as far away as Barnstaple, Plymouth and Exmouth.
Mr Phillips said Matthew had praised the facilities and described the club as 'one of the top venues in the country'.
Mr Phillips said he hoped the event would renew people's interest in the sport.
'Lots of people say to me, "I used to play table tennis", and all they want is to be pointed in the right direction. It is just making that first step. I'm sure they would enjoy it if they came along,' he said.
It has been a busy fortnight for the Riverside Club, which has also staged the Exeter Open and a major tournament for disabled players. The table tennis league season is also due to begin towards the end of this month.
