THE official switch-on of Tavistock?s Christmas lights drew hundreds of people into Bedford Square last Friday.
But Tavistock Chamber of Commerce, which organises the lights, is needs cash contributions to pay for the dazzling display.
Chamber member Dave McDowall said the beautiful display of lights cost around £5,000 to put on each year, including maintenance and insurance.
Traders in the town who have contributed to the cost are all displaying window stickers ? but Mr McDowall said there were still some who had not come forward with contributions, leaving the chamber with a £1,000 shortfall.
He said: ?The chamber would like to encourage those who have not contributed to do so, including people out on the industrial estates. I know they don?t see them, but the lights do encourage trade into Tavistock ? the goodwill spreads to all.
?Last year we were sent £10 by a pensioner anonymously towards the lights ? I?m sure if a pensioner can do it, businesses can.?
Also switched on last Friday was the Tree of Light, a charity fundraiser organised by Tavistock Lions Club.
The bulbs on the tree of light have all been sponsored by residents wishing to remember a special person or event.
Peter Harding, chairman of the Lions Club, said: ?We?ve raised in excess of £2,300, so we?ve already passed last year?s total.
?We?re very pleased ? it?s something that?s caught the imagination of the town and it brightens up the square during the Christmas period.?
Funds raised from the Tree of Light will be donated to Macmillan Nurses.
