TAVISTOCK Chamber of Commerce is attempting to help farmers in the area trapped on their land by the foot and mouth disease restrictions.

The executive committee of the chamber decided on Monday to try and set up a special service to farmers affected by the crisis.

David McDowall said: 'We hope to offer deliveries, by appointment, to their farm entrances.

'We want traders in the area who are prepared to give this service to the farmers to write to me, with their shop or trade name and telephone number and possible days that a delivery service can be operated.'

Mr McDowall said payment for goods could be done by credit card over the telephone, or cash on delivery at the farm entrance.

He advised farmers interested in the service to contact him for a list of traders who have agreed to be involved in the scheme.

The chamber is to write to West Devon and Torridge MP John Burnett, asking him to pressurise the Government into considering assistance for the tourist industry in the area, which is being severely affected by the situation.

'Many might need short-term assistance to see them through,' he said.
