Tipton St John 1

Chagford 3

CHAGFORD picked up consecutive 3-1 away wins with a gritty and stubborn performance against a physically strong Tipton St John team.

Matt Mortimer's second minute goal settled the visitors and they went on to control much of the first period. However Scott Luscombe had to pull off a fine penalty save to keep Chagford ahead before Mortimer's second goal gave them breathing space.

When Steve Kinsey put Chagford three goals to the good, just before half-time, it looked as though they were going to romp home.

Tipton had different ideas from the restart and threw all they could at Chagford's defence, which refused to buckle under pressure. The narrow pitch favoured the hosts and their bustling forwards, much of their breaks coming from long throws and long through balls. Despite conceding a scrappy goal, Chagford went on to finish on top and take home three well won points.

n On Saturday Chagford are at home to Cullompton Rangers, kick-off at 3pm.

Chagford Reserves 3

Axmouth Utd 2

CHAGFORD Reserves made it three wins on the trot, as they sought to pull away from the lower reaches of their division.

They were handed an early goal as David Jordan exchanged passes with Jerome Whatley, the latter deftly chipping the visiting 'keeper in the fourth minute. Much of Chagford's good play came from either flank as they made use of Vincent and, in particular, Jordan who battled for every half chance of getting the ball into the Axmouth penalty area. This held Axmouth back for the first 25 minutes but they gradually fought back. Scarry saved low to his right and his defence held firm, albeit with some desperate defending. Just before the break, Scarry saved a slightly deflected shot to keep his team ahead. Woof had had a goal chalked off for an earlier offside call and Vincent blazed the ball over the top.

Early in the second half Chagford's Whatley was on hand to finish off a clipped short pass by Ralph.

The goal appeared to deflate Axmouth a little and they struggled to pick themselves up. Woof saw a fine shot superbly saved by Smart in the visitors goal but the resistance was broken as Philpott fed Ralph who crisply volleyed the ball home for a deserved third.

Just seven minutes passed when Thorn pushed his attacker from behind and Axmouth were awarded the penalty. Hughes stepped up to send Scarry the wrong way and Axmouth were back in the match. They were up against a grittier Chagford team though and, despite scoring again late on, they were unable to find an equaliser.
