THE Ockment Centre is celebrating a phenomenal success in its Computer Learning Zone, recording a more than 95% exam pass rate for students.
The centre, which prides itself on its friendly and welcoming approach to learning, especially towards people who may have had bad experiences through formal education, has achieved an exceptional pass rate in the last few months ? 164 out of 172 people have gained a qualification.
The majority of the exams taken have been for the European Computer Driving Licence. This enables a prospective employee to become computer literate, a quality frequently asked for by employers across Europe.
Geoff Mills, ICT tutor at the centre, said: ?This course covers the basics, such as word processing and databases, but also introduces the internet and Powerpoint presentation graphics which are skills frequently regarded as essential in the employment market.?
Mr Mills said having a creche at the centre ?really made a difference? to parents who wanted to update their skills, allowing them to study in peace.
The computer centre is currently part-funded through the New Opportunities Fund which enables it to keep its fees low and offer concessions to people who qualify for certain benefits.
In the autumn, this funding will enable the Ockment Centre to offer a new digital photography course.
During August and September, free taster sessions on the internet and using word processing software are available.
