BIG, bold and beautiful were some of the comments at the gardening club's annual produce show in Bere Alston.
Gardeners pulled out all the stops to ensure this, the 100th show of Bere Ferrers Horticultural Society, was the best for many a year. Local schoolchildren supported the event, entering their classes with enthusiasm and producing colourful posters.
Summer blooms decked the parish hall in a blaze of colour. There were striking examples of bears breeches, agapanthus, dahlias and gladioli, not forgetting the perfumed classes for pinks and roses, with hydrangeas making a strong comeback.
Particularly well supported sections included decorative, pot plants and photography; and the bowls of floating flowers resembled trifles which looked good enough to eat.
The arts and crafts movement is thriving in the Bere Peninsula, as there were handicrafts of a high standard, ranging from different types of embroidery, canvas work, ceramics, to model and wooden exhibits and paintings.
The history group had organised a display of photographs and newspaper cuttings to celebrate the centenary, which attracted a great deal of interest.
