ONE of Okehampton's most remarkable ladies celebrated her birthday last week . . . When Okehampton resident Gwen Knight was born the world was a profoundly different place — there had been no world wars, no journeys into space and cars were a distant dream. The year was 1906. Last week Gwen celebrated her 102 birthday, a staggering achievement — Gwen had already reached 60 when England won football's World Cup! Gwen still manages to get out of the house and was even driving a moped well into her 70s and she flew to Jersey at the age of 89. She celebrated her birthday with her daughter Carol, 62, and her son Colin, 73, as well as other friends and family. Okehampton mayor Tony Leech paid Gwen a visit to deliver a bouquet of flowers — one of many that were received. Gwen has lived in Okehampton for the past 30 years.
