A WEST Devon woman celebrated her centenary with family and friends with a service of celebration and a party.

Annie Cole from Tavistock marked her 100th birthday with a service of celebration at St Peter's Church in Lamerton, a party and birthday cake at Harewood Day Centre, and a family lunch where she opened her 101 birthday cards.

Annie was born in Sowton Town, Peter Tavy, the eldest of eight children of William and Matilda Mudge. She left Peter Tavy School at 14 and taught the infants at the school until she was 17.

Annie married Cecil Cole in 1941 and moved to Chaddlehanger, where she still lives. The couple had two children, James and Ann, and two grandchildren, Richard and Susanna.

For her birthday, Annie did not want presents, so donations were made for the Lamerton Church tower fund. Donations added up to more than £700.

Annie expressed thanks to all who helped to make her birthday so special.
