A RESIDENT of Ravenscroft Nursing Home in Yelverton celebrated her 100th birthday on Sunday.

Irene Toy was born in Warren Street, Devonport, on October 24 1904 to George and Edith Tothill.

She had two sisters, Violet and Winifred, and attended Morice town Primary and Higher Elementary Schools.

Irene worked for Stephens Bakery on Mutley Plain and married Frederick Toy on December 26 1927 at Charles Church in Plymouth.

They lived in the Lipson area until 1970 and then the Miles Mitchell village at Crownhill.

Frederick died in 1975. The couple had a son and a daughter and Irene now also has five grandchildren and one great grand-daughter.

In the year 2000, at the age of 96, Irene moved to her present home at Ravenscroft.
