ST LUKE'S Hospice has praised the people of Callington for their support as the charity celebrates its first anniversary of trading in the town. The new shop, which opened in February, has been a great success with its first year's turnover comparing favourably with shops in Tavistock — a town with more than double the population. Shop manager Alison Gillan said the local people had been very supportive and very generous with the items they had brought in. Mrs Gillan said: 'We see people on a regular basis — they come in day to day and always buy something. 'We have been exceeding our target figures by at least £200 every week. We certainly did not expect it to be this successful.' Mrs Gillan said with nothing in the way of clothes shops in Callington the shop was filling a need. 'We have priced things very realistically and therefore we have a very quick turnover.' A three piece suite in the shop window soon sold for £90 and a chestnut mare china horse was sold on e-bay making £300 for the charity, said the manager. St Luke's Hospice in Plymouth provides care to hundreds of people in South East Cornwall and South West Devon suffering from incurable diseases. The care is not just medical and nursing but incorporates practical, financial, emotional and spiritual support as well.
