ST GEORGE'S Day will be celebrated in Okehampton this year with a big breakfast and a new venue.

The breakfast, previously been held at The Plume of Feathers until it closed last year, will now be at The Exeter Arms on Thursday April 23 from 8am.

Passionate Englishman and founder of the big breakfast, Derek Godfrey Brown, said: 'It all started back in 1995. The reason behind it was because I am proud of being English and I think we ought to support our patron saint.

'The breakfast is really enjoyable and we get quite a range of people turning up.

'It gives everyone the chance to get together and celebrate the day with each other.'

St George's emblem, a red cross on a white background, is the flag of England and part of the British flag.

The emblem was adopted by Richard the Lion Heart and brought to England in the 12th century. The king's soldiers wore it on their tunics to avoid confusion in battle.

Everyone is welcome to the breakfast, with all proceeds going to charity. For information phone Lisa at The Exeter Arms on 01837 53337 or Derek Godfrey Brown on 01837 53158.
