TO celebrate Kit Hill's recent designation as a Local Nature Reserve, a special day of walks, children's activities and a picnic lunch has been planned for Thursday, July 31 during the 'Love Parks Week' festival. The Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty's volunteering project, Helping Hands for Heritage, has joined forces with Cormac Solutions and Cornwall Council to invite local residents to enjoy the many aspects that make Kit Hill a unique and special place. Find out more about the wildlife and archaeology of Kit Hill, on a free guided walk around the south side of the Hill, starting at 11am. Discover the heathland and explore prehistory and 18th and 19th century mining heritage with the Kit Hill ranger Jenny Heskett, and local historians Stephen Docksey and Dave Williams. A free picnic pasty lunch from Helluva Pasties will be provided at 1pm at the summit. There will then be the option to continue walking on the north side of the hill exploring the wildlife in the quarry and the history of the incline railway and prehistoric farming in the afternoon. Numbers are limited so booking is essential. At 2pm, families can enjoy two activities. Cast nets for pond dipping to discover what lives in Kit Hill's quarry or take part in a treasure trail. Dog advice and microchipping will also be available all day at the summit. To find out more call 01822 835030.
