OKEHAMPTON was once again transformed last Saturday as the carnival took over the town centre.

The Charter Hall was filled with youngsters dressed in colourful and inventive costumes for the fancy dress competition. The children's procession took place in the afternoon and the main procession made its way through the town during the evening. Mayor of Okehampton Maureen McDonald crowned the carnival royalty, including queen Kymberley MacDonald and prince and princess Bradley Bosher and Charlotte Dell.

Stan Stormont, chairman of the carnival committee, was very pleased with how the day turned out: 'It was a great day. The weather was absolutely perfect, and everyone who participated seemed to enjoy themselves greatly.

'We had more children enter the procession than ever before, which was great. The coffee morning was also packed, which was great.

'Things were a bit quieter in the evening, but with things as they are we're not surprised.'

Elaine Gord from the carnival committee was also happy. She said: 'Everything went really well. It was an excellent day, with an excellent turn-out for the children's procession.

'The coffee morning and the rest of the day was very well supported by the people of the town, which we are very grateful for.'

The carnival committee expressed their thanks to everyone who supported the event, and their apologies to carnival princess Charlotte Dell, whose name was given incorrectly as Catherine in the lead-up to the carnival.

They are currently in the process of counting the money raised by the day's events.
