SHE may not have been able to keep pace with a resurgent Paula Radcliffe, but Okehampton woman Catherine Walton was one of a team who completed last month?s New York Marathon to raise money to buy sports wheelchairs for disabled youngsters. Catherine was one of 350 runners who completed the 26.2-mile race on Sunday, November 7, for Get Kids Going! which helps children and young people with disabilities. Catherine said she was delighted to be part of the charity team taking part in one of the world?s best known marathons. She said: ?I really wanted to run to help disabled children and young people, especially those kids who can?t even walk, never mind run! These children desperately need wheelchairs to get about and compete in sports. ?The average cost of a sports wheelchair is £3,000, so I am hoping to raise as much as I can for Get Kids Going!? Catherine lined up with 35,000 other runners from all over the world, including Paula Radcliffe, who marked her return following disappointment at the Olympics by winning the women?s race in two hours, 23 mins, 10 secs. The runners started near the Statue of Liberty, then ran over the Verrazano Narrows Bridge (more than 13,000ft long) into the streets of Brooklyn. The field then went past Brooklyn Bridge into Queens and left over the Queensboro Bridge into Harlem, finishing to the roar of the crowd in Central Park. Get Kids Going! has already helped hundreds of disabled youngsters and the New York Marathon fundraising is expected to bring in more than £100,000 ? more than £3,800 per mile. As well as providing disabled youngsters with sports equipment, the charity also helps provide sports training, physiotherapy, travel to sporting events and designs sports wheelchairs to help British youngsters become World and Olympic champions. The charity?s president is double Olympic gold medallist and leader of the London 2012 Olympic bid, Lord Sebastian Coe.
