SIR Francis Drake will rise again at Buckland Abbey near Yelverton this month, when he takes on his old adversary the King of Spain on two consecutive Sundays. The action takes place in the Great Barn, when Dartmoor Border Morris perform their seasonal Mummers' Play, followed by plenty of dancing, on Sunday December 10 and 17. Mumming plays are ritual folk dramas with a peculiar mix of Christian and pre-Christian symbolism. Midwinter customs were a time for misrule and the play features several peculiar characters, from the Winter Queen, Mother Dolly, Horse and Groom to the miraculous Doctor. Dartmoor Border squire, Steve Newland, said: 'The plays were taken to the great houses and performed before gentry by labourers, who would be rewarded with gifts of food, drink, and coins of the realm. 'There are two performances on both days, at 2pm and 3.30pm.' Dartmoor Border Morris are a mixed family side that performs 'border' stick dances from Shropshire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Devon. 'We are always interested in receiving committed new members, whether dancers or musicians' said Steve. 'We are currently in our practice season, which is a good time to learn. 'Throughout summer, we dance weekly at local pubs, fetes and festivals.'
