CASTLE Drogo celebrated its 100th birthday on Monday, with plans to mark the event in style throughout the week.
A traditional country fayre will take place this Saturday and Sunday between 11am-5pm, to mark the anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone on April 4, 1911 by Julius Drewe. The castle, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, was completed in 1930.
The new orchard at the castle will be opened by Julius Drewe's great-granddaughter on Saturday at 2pm. A specially carved piece of granite originally intended to be used in building Castle Drogo will be unveiled on Sunday at 2pm outside the castle.
Throughout the weekend, a vintage tractor display, morris dancing, stone masonry, traditional games and other events will take place. There will also be a beer and cider stall, and a hog roast.
A birthday cake specially prepared in the castle cafe was cut by staff and volunteers on Monday. Adrian Colston, general manager at Castle Drogo, said: 'We would like to invite everyone to come along to our traditional country fayre to celebrate. It will be a wonderful day for all of us to celebrate this fantastic place we all know and love.'
