TAVISTOCK is the only town in Devon to have its farmers? market nominated in a new search for ?Britain?s Favourite Farmers? Market?. This is a national campaign being led by the magazine Country Life, and sponsored by property specialists Strutt and Parker. Six expert judges with a passion for local food have nominated three of their favourite regional markets from the Midlands; Scotland and the North; Wales; the East of England; the South East; and the South West. John Burton Race, an acclaimed chef and broadcaster, is the South West judge. He said: ?Tavistock Farmers? Market is a great shop window for what?s best and local. ?Not only is the food outstanding but the setting is pretty.? The two other towns voted for in the South West region are: Carruan Farmers? Market in North Cornwall, and Swindon Farmers? Market in Wiltshire. The farmers? market in Tavistock takes place on the second and fourth Saturdays in front of the town hall. Organised by the Tavistock Farmers? Market Association, there are 22 stall holders who offer a wide range of produce including meat; milk and cheese; plain, exotic, herb and vegetable varieties of bread; ostrich and emu eggs; and chutneys. Entertainment is a key feature of the market which has featured a jazz band, a harpist and a silver band. Tavistock has already been named top food town in the South West during a big regional competition held earlier this year. It was also nominated in a previous Country Life competition to find the best market town in the UK. Country Life readers and the public are invited to vote for their favourite on the shortlist. The regional winners will be announced in Country Life?s issue of November 23 and the overall national winner will be announced in the issue of November 30. In order to vote, call into any Strutt and Parker office to pick up an entry form, or vote online at country.co.uk/farmersmarkets The voting deadline is October 12.
