ORGANISERS of an event in Okehampton to celebrate the Queen Mother's 100th birthday on August 4 are appealing for cash to make the party go with a swing.

The chamber of trade and town council are hoping local businesses will put some money into the kitty so all the plans can be put into action.

The main event was originally going to be a street party but it is felt the logistics involved in road closures will be insurmountable unless the Government declares the day a public holiday. Therefore, Simmons Park will be the venue for a birthday picnic party.

The younger members of the community will be entertained in the park and be able to enjoy the fun fair.

There will be a cream tea and sing-a-long for senior citizens in the Charter Hall and a photographic exhibition in the Museum of Dartmoor Life depicting the Queen Mother as she was in each of the decades of her life and at the same time portraying life in Okehampton during each of the periods.

Derek Godfrey-Brown, from the chamber of trade, said: 'As other organisations see these plans coming to fruition they are coming up with suggestions and so it should be a really good day — a real unifying and enjoyable occasion for the youngest to the oldest resident.

'Unfortunately, this cannot be done without money and so as organisers we are appealing for contributions.'

He is asking that cheques for the Queen Mother's Centenary Celebrations be made out to QMCC —2000 and sent to the town hall.

If any money is left over it will be donated towards a piece of medical equipment for the proposed new hospital.

'Let's put Okehampton really on the map and let people know we are proud of what the Queen Mother has done for this nation during her life.'

The next meeting to discuss the celebrations is on June 14 at 7pm in the town hall council chamber. Everyone is welcome.
